Plejecenter Sønderhaven is a Care Center with homes for the elderly and the disabled, situated in Ballerup, 15 kilometers north-west of central Copenhagen.
A number of buildings are placed so they together form a small urban space. Coziness, empathy and sustainability were the design goals; a place where one can live in dignity and harmony with the surrounding nature.
By the entrance, you find pavers with a very detailed and beautiful graphic concrete pattern. Still today they look as good as they did when the Center opened in 2012. Inside the building light ceiling panels made of glass fibre reinforced concrete repeat the same fascinating pattern.
The care center design is a result of a competition, won by general contractor Einar Kornerup in collaboration with the architectural firm Entasis and consulting engineers Moe & Brødsgaard.
The pavers were cast by Aarhus Cementvarefabrik A/S and the ceiling panels by BB Fiberbeton AS.
