Burial Hall Graphic Concrete Floor

United Kingdom

Burial Hall Graphic Concrete Floor

The project for the National Trust in the summer of 2019 involved creating a visually accurate representation of an Anglo Saxon King's burial chamber. The central area of the exhibition hall showcased artifacts from the era and featured a 6.6 x 3.8m graphic floor depicting the layout of the burial ship from 625 AD. The purpose was to provide visitors with a tangible understanding of the burial layout. The result was a visually stunning 60-tile precast floor, durable enough to withstand high foot traffic. The process involved creating an illustration based on archaeological surveys, dividing it into panels, and casting them with concrete and basalt mix. The floor panels were flush-mounted for easy access, allowing visitors to walk on and feel the surface, enhancing their sensory experience and understanding of the burial chamber's scale.
